Rumors about the Pixel 9a are heating up even before Google officially unveils it. Following the recent announcement of the Pixel 9 series, tech enthusiasts are buzzing with speculation about the features of the upcoming Pixel 9a. While we don’t have a launch date yet, some juicy details have emerged, particularly about its camera and chipset.
According to a report from Android Authority, the Pixel 9a, codenamed “tegu,” is expected to sport the same 48-megapixel camera sensor as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which is currently the priciest phone in Google’s lineup. This could mean that the Pixel 9a is set to deliver impressive photography capabilities at a more budget-friendly price.
On the chipset front, it looks like the Pixel 9a will be powered by the Google Tensor G4 processor, the same chip that fuels the Pixel 9 series. However, don’t expect it to be quite as powerful. The Pixel 9a’s G4 chip will use Integrated Package on Package (IPoP) technology, which is thicker and tends to run hotter than the Fan-Out Panel Level Packaging (FOPLP) found in the Pixel 9. While this might lead to slightly reduced performance, it helps keep costs down, which is essential for the A series.
Another notable difference is the modem. The Pixel 9a will come equipped with the older Exynos Modem 5300, previously used in the Pixel 8 series. This contrasts with the Pixel 9’s newer Exynos Modem 5400, which boasts better efficiency and advanced 5G features. By opting for the older modem, Google is likely trying to strike a balance between affordability and decent performance.
As more information trickles in, it’ll be fascinating to see how Google plans to distinguish the A series from its flagship models. The Pixel 9a might be the beginning of a new identity for the A series, offering users a unique choice within the Pixel family.
In case you missed it, the Pixel 8a features a vibrant 6.1-inch OLED Actua display with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 and a 120 Hz refresh rate. It’s bright, reaching up to 2000 nits, and supports HDR, promising a fantastic viewing experience. The design is reminiscent of its predecessors, with a matte finish and a polished aluminum frame, but the camera module has a new look with a horizontal strap housing two sensors.
At just 188 grams, the Pixel 8a is compact and measures 152.1mm x 72.7mm x 8.9mm, making it comfortable to hold. Inside, it packs the Tensor G3 chipset and Titan M2 security coprocessor, along with 8 GB of LPDDR5x RAM, sharing many of the AI features seen in the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro.
