New Flat Flexible Cables (FFCs)
and Solder to Pin Jumper Cables (S2P)
for the McIntosh C32 Preamp
8 FFCs and 5 Solder to Pin Jumper Cables + Screw Terminals
(Single Cables Not Available - Only Complete Kits)
The C32 Ribbon Kit is designed especially for McIntosh Service Centers who understand the complexity of the C32 and the installation of this kit. The kit is also recommended for those "Non McIntosh Service Centers" with a very solid electronics background and the dexterity for removing and re-installing component boards. You will be required to remove top/bottom covers, knobs, faceplate and various circuit boards to access FFC and S2P headers of certain boards.
Consumers:
If you are contemplating a C32 Pre-amp purchase, make sure these cables have been replaced or at least a C32 Kit is included with your C32 purchase.
The C32 FFC Kit Includes:
8 Flat Flexible Cables (FFCs)
5 Solder to Pin (S2P) Jumper Cables
5 Terminal Screw Block Connectors
8X10 Photo Cable Identifier
FFC Literature, Identification Table and Manufacturing Data
The FFCs
installation requires no soldering. Each FFC has laser etched identification of the two boards they attach to. A very simple identification table is included explaining attachment location. Modern technology allows for an added "Stiffner" blue backer to firmly seat each FFC cable to each header. This eliminates the need for anchoring the FFC with adhesive tape to the header.
The S2P
jumper cables require one end to be soldered to a board and the other
end inserted and screwed down on the included Terminal Screw Block Connectors (4 pin and 5 pin versions). The Terminal Screw Block connector is inserted into the existing female header on the receiving component board. The terminal screw block connector tines provide a wider surface contact area vs. the original factory "One Wire" inserted into the header. It is recommended to replace S2P jumper cables in conjunction with FFCs replacement.
History:
During the late 1970s early 1980s, an upstart supplier produced an early version of the FFC to McIntosh Labs. Although innovative at the time, materials in manufacturing were found decades later to prematurely decay with resulting delamination. Displaying a McIntosh C32 preamp in a decorative wooden cabinet was and remains a common practice. As beautiful as this combination appears, it is thought to have accelerated the FFCs failure due to early versions of adhesives and polymers not able to withstand the C32 operating temperatures. The S2P jumper cables, although less problematic were found to delaminate in extreme cases. The 2.54mm FFCs were never used again by McIntosh Labs.
Testing:
In the developmental stages, five McIntosh C32 units over a 3-year period were “Beta Tested”; 2 free standing units without ever being housed in a L52 wooden cabinet, 2 units always housed in a L52 wooden cabinet and 1 unit housed in a L52 cabinet sitting on top of a MC2205 in a L54 wooden cabinet. In our findings, those C32s residing inside a wooden cabinet showed significant FFC delamination. The S2P jumper cables to a lesser degree were affected as well.  The most severe FFC delamination came from the C32 that sat on top of a MC2205 both housed in wooden cabinets. The freestanding C32 units (not inside wooden cabinets) suffered the least FFC delamination however damage was not evident until the FFCs were actually handled, unplugged and reinsertion attempted. A sixth C32 unit was used as a “Test Control” and was left intact with only the top and bottom panels removed for visual inspection and comparison.
New FFCs Construction Data
:
Voltage rating @ 300V, conductors are copper tin plating, UL flame rating VW1, dielectric strength 5000v, insulation resistance 5000M ohms, blue end stiffener added to assist compression within the component board headers and most importantly the polyester insulation with a temperature operating rage of -67° F to 225° F
New S2P Jumper Cable Data
:
Voltage rating @ 300V, conductors are copper tin plating 26ga 7 strand, UL flame rating VW-1, dielectric strength 5000v, insulation resistance 10,000M ohms, PVC insulation with polarization strip, operating range -4° F to 221° F. This operating temperatures is identical for the Terminal Screw Block Connectors.
