Description
McIntosh C20 PreamplifierI believe this is a special unit. As I create this listing, I'm listening to it and wondering why I'm selling it. It is truly one of the best sounding vintage pre-amplifiers that I have heard. I'm currently feeding a restored pair of MC30's and Altec 19's with it and the sound is spectacular.
This is the latest generation of the C20's made between 1961 and 1963. Based on the serial number this one is probably from 1962.
This unit is, to the best of my knowledge, all original. I can't know for sure, but I believe most of the tubes are original as well.
The tubes are quite valuable themselves. They are all Telefunken tubes with the exception of the V8 rectifier 6X4, it is a GE, which may be original as well.
The 12AX7 tubes in positions V1, V2, V5 and V6 would appear to be original. They are Telefunken with a date code of June, 1961 (ax date code)
They all test in the 89-91% range.
The 12AU7's that occupy V3 and V4 positions both test very well, in the 90-100% range.
The 12AX7 in the V7 position may have been replaced, it's different than the other four, but it also tests well.
Looking at the inside, there is no evidence of any work, component replacement or modifications.
The bumblebee capacitors look radiant and are easy to read.
There is no evidence of heat stress or marks on the tag boards.
While listening and operating this, their is no hum and all controls work as they should without causing static.
The cabinet for this unit is in excellent condition. There is a visible imperfection on the left front of cabinet as shown in the pictures. That could be made better with some stain or Old English.
Now, for the not so good. Both the glass and metal faceplates have a fair amount of lettering missing. It is visible in the pictures. The end caps have some scratches but could easily be replaced. The tips of the low filter pots on the backside are broken off, but they can still be adjusted and the sound is not affected by this.
Due to the condition of the vacuum tubes, controls, components and sound quality, it would seem to reason that this unit has not seen a lot of use.
If you are looking for an all original unit with an excellent set of tubes and great sound, this unit should be worth your consideration.
As seen on the transformer, Dave O'Brien (McIntosh Performance Clinics) put his seal of approval on it back on April 6th of 1979.
Over the years I have compulsively bought McIntosh equipment. To the point where some of it has seen little or no real use. I'm approaching 60 and occasionally I thin out my collection. I recently acquired a C22 original that I think I will take with me when I ago (I hear that's not really allowed). So for now, I do not have room for this C20 and will make it available for another audiophile to enjoy.
Due to age, all sales final.
